This presentation is the result of a trip by David Whitney and his father, Bill Whitney to Oshkosh, WI and back from Auburn, WA, in a Cessna 170B airplane. They departed Auburn on July 25, 2009 and returned to Auburn on August 1. Purpose of the trip was to attend the EAA World famous Aviation celebration "AirVenture 2009" which is an annual event attracting thousands of airplanes. Total flight distance to and from Oshkosh was approximately 2,960 nautical miles and 32 flight hours over 4 days flying to and from Oshkosh.. ![]() ![]() ![]() The single engine four place plane was built by Cessna Aircraft in 1954 and has a wingspan of 36 feet and a useful load of 800 pounds. It is powered by a Continental C-145 engine rated at about 145 horsepower. The plane is in excellent condition with a recent engine major overhaul and a completely new interior. It cruises at approximately 100 nautical miles per hour (105 statute mph). Fuel consumption is about 7.5 gallons per hour and tankage is 37 gallons of fuel. The plane is hangered at Auburn, WA Airport. ![]() ![]() The following map shows the routing of the flight trips to and from Oshkosh. ![]() Going east (Blue), the route follows closely the great circle shortest disltance adjusted for most economical fuel cost. Routing stops were determined using a computer program which applies current fuel prices together with requested airport requirements, aircraft performance and time length requested for the individual flight legs. We chose 2.5 hours as maximum flight time per leg. ![]() The computer program called for easterly direction stops at Kellogg,ID; Big Sandy,MT; Sidney,MT; Jamestown, ND: and Buffalo, MN before reaching Oshkosh. An extra stop had to be made at Thompson Falls, MT as there was no self fueling credit card pump at Kellogg, ID and no attendent was available. We therefor continued on to Thompson Falls where a self fueling pump was available and the fuel cost was only 1 cent higher per gallon than the price quoted for Kellogg. An overnight stop was made at Sidney, MT On our return west, we varied the route to provide different scenery and the opportunity to fly by Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore monuments. Resulting stops were Austin,MN; Mitchell,SD; Custer,SD; Miles City,MT; Lewistown,MT; Polson,MT, and Colville,WA. Two overnights were required as a result of a late departure from Oshkosh and the reduced ground speed resulting from the prevailing westerly winds. The two overnight stops were made at Mitchell,SD and Miles City, MT. |

On the following pages are digital photos taken during the trip. The flight trip photos were taken from inside the plane and the fidelity is greatly effected by the windshield which after 55 years is showing spots of noticeable discoloration. Also, the images have been reduced in size and memory to provide for reduced downloading time. In spite of the reduced photo memory size, download may take a while. The original photos have been reduced to 900 pixel width size and further reduced for page display to 450 pixel width. To view any of the photos at the higher 900 pixel width and increased size, click on the photo. You will have to use your 'BACK' key to return to the webpage you are viewing.
